Demon Love Spell is a cheeky little book where Miko, a shrine maiden, can turn her boyfriend into a small doll whenever she wants. And not just any doll. It can walk and talk like a miniature version of her boyfriend. A boyfriend that isn’t too normal. Not when he’s an incubus who sustains himself on the affection of girls. But love tastes a lot sweeter and he promises to stay out of trouble if Miko only promises to be his.
Typing all of that is making me gush.
It was easy to give each book five stars because I loved every second.
All the antics ensue, especially when Miko’s dad finds out who Kargura really is. Everything gets wild and crazy and over the top in true manga fashion - the main reason I love the genre so much. I really can’t go for that series stuff.
But with how cute the premise of the story is, that was also its biggest downfall. The end of the story means that Miko becomes Kagura’s. I’ll let your imagination understand what that means. There’s only so long one girl can hold off a true Don Juan. And trust me, Kagura really tries his best. Shinjo comes up with all sorts of ways to stretch the story out (more antics) but I was getting tired of it all. It became a Tom and Jerry situation. With how much I didn’t want the story to end, it was also a relief.
After saying all of that, the ending was extremely rushed. One second the pair moves out and we get into a grove in their new life, and the next second the story is done. If the premise hadn’t been them becoming one, I think the story could have continued. I wouldn’t have minded seeing the two of them fighting demons together. Essentially just living in their element. And the way it ended. Nothing hinted that it was going to come to that. Not when they gave Kagura all that energy other ways.
Manga is a really weird thing for me to review. The story is told in an episode format and I don’t know anything technical to critic. It’s literally just me saying whether I liked it or not. Well I really liked this one. The characters were perfect, the art was expressive and not over the top, and I loved the world that Shinjo created. Plus, the comedy really rounded it out. I was laughing out loud a few times.
There’s nothing much else to add unless it’s me telling you to check this series out right away. I guess this review is just going to be as short as the series was.
